Holy Spirit, the Christ of Michelangelo returns to the basilica

After being exhibited in Turin and Naples , Michelangelo's Christ has returned to Florence to be placed in the center of the sacristy of the Basilica of Santo Spirito. The wooden work was sculpted as a sign of gratitude for the Augustinians who had hosted Michelangelo between the spring of 1493 and the autumn of 1494, but was attributed to the artist only in 1962 .
The new and central location of the work , absent in Florence since 2000, allows a greater observation space; the operation was carried out thanks to the contribution of the non-profit foundation Friends of Florence, with the permission of the Superintendence of Fine Arts and Landscape for the metropolitan city of Florence and the provinces of Pistoia and Prato and with the technical supervision of the Opificio delle Pietre Dure.
We are happy to contribute to the enhancement of the Crucifix by Michelangelo and to the improvement of the use of the sacristy of Santo Spirito - So underlines Simonetta Brandolini d'Adda President of Friends of Florence - Our attention to the artist has always been high , many of our donors have at heart the preservation of his works and this sensitivity only feeds the work of protection and enhancement of the art of the great master.
